HOG WILD! (2022) - for Solo Tuba

HOG WILD! was commissioned by Brendan Ige in the Summer of 2022. The objective of the commission was to create a highly virtuosic, flashy piece for Brendan that pushed the limits of what is possible on the tuba. HOG WILD! is meant to be comedic, mocking virtuosity for the sake of virtuosity. HOG WILD! requires highly advanced range, flexibility, technical abilities, dynamic and tempo control, constant attention to articulation, meter, and rhythm, and the ability to execute several different types of extended techniques. Given the difficult nature of the piece, the tonal centers are kept in relatively “easy” keys.

DOUBLETROUBLE (2022) - for solo Baritone Saxophone

DOUBLETROUBLE was written in late 2021/early 2022 for Don-Paul Kahl. This work depicts an argument within one’s mind. The soloist essentially converses with themselves via suddenly changing tessitura, dynamics, techniques, tonality, style, and overall atmosphere. After a brief introduction, DOUBLETROUBLE consists of two contrasting sections – a groovy, technical portion, and a slow, contemplative one, with both sections stated twice. The piece ends with the sound fading into nothingness, as the mind is finally at peace.
