ALTERNATE: Sonata for Cornet and Piano (2025) is the result of a consortium for cornet and piano led by Dr. Doug Lindsey in the Summer of 2024. This virtuosic sonata draws inspiration from modern-day depictions of the doppelgänger, a fictitious, ghostly look-alike of a living person. Further inspiration comes from Franz Schubert's famed lied Der Doppelgänger and his setting of Heinrich Heine’s text for the song. The Sonata consists of three stand-alone movements that loosely follow a human encountering their alternate (I. Face in the Moonlight), the human reminiscing on their life as the alternate closes in (II. The Quiet Streets), and finally, the alternate successfully replacing the human, now trapped in an infinite void while the alternate continues to live out the life the human once had (III. A New Beginning).
